The United Nations General Assembly Third Committee: SOCHUM is one of the six General Assembly Committees of the United Nations. The committee is mainly concerned with the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, it’s responsible for dealing with matters such as but not limited to elimination of racism, promotion of fundamental freedoms, advancement of women, protection of the children, treatment of refugees, protection of indigenous populations, crime prevention and criminal justice.

WHO

World Health Organization is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. WHO’s main objectives are to promote health, keep the world safe and help the vulnerable. WHO promotes universal health coverage, strives to provide better health and well-being, and responds to health emergencies. It fights against communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases. WHO works around the world to with governments, partners, civil society organizations and the private sector.

NATO

Agenda Item: Open Agenda

NATO is a security alliance of 30 countries from North America and Europe. It is the principal security instrument of the transatlantic community and expression of its common democratic values. It is the practical means through which the security of North America and Europe are permanently tied together. NATO enlargement has furthered the U.S. goal of a Europe whole, free, and at peace.  In addition to its traditional role in the territorial defense of Allied nations, NATO leads the UN-mandated International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan and has ongoing missions in the Balkans and the Mediterranean; it also conducts extensive training exercises and offers security support to partners around the globe, including the European Union in particular but also the United Nations and the African Union.

UNSC

The Security Council's primary responsibility, is the maintenance of international peace and security.  It has 15 Members (5 permanent and 10 non-permanent members). Each Member has one vote, the permanent member states have the right to veto the votes. Under the Charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. The Security Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.

ECOSOC

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations’ central platform for
reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable development. ECOSOC is one of
the 6 principal organs of the United Nations. The council was designed to promote higher living standards, by solving economic, social and medical matters. It engages in international cooperation in regards to preserving matters of culture, diversity, society. The committee coordinates with other organizations, such non-governmental, to ensure the reachability of its goals. ECOSOC operates at the center of the UN on all dimensions of sustainable development—economic, social and environmental through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set in 2015.
